In 1911, the Ringlings purchased land along Sarasota Bay and began developing it into a grand winter retreat. By 1924, their dream home, Ca’ d’Zan—Venetian for “House of John”—was completed. The mansion was an opulent Venetian Gothic palace inspired by the palazzos of Venice that the couple had admired during their European travels.
